Divers find submarine sunk in 1940

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 9 (UPI) -- A Russian submarine sunk by mines in 1940 has been found after a decade-long search near the Aland islands in the Baltic Sea, a dive team said.

The wreck of the S-2 class sub was discovered near the boundary between Sweden and Finland by a six-member Swedish dive team, the Swedish news agency TT reported Tuesday.

The sub carried a crew of 50 men, all of them believed killed Jan. 2, 1940, TT reported.

The divers who found the wreck included Ingvald Eckerman, a grandson of J.A. Eckerman, who witnessed the accident as he stood watch at a nearby lighthouse, TT reported.
