Brazil's Navy recovers debris from the missing Air France jet

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 8 (UPI) -- Brazilian divers Monday recovered a large portion of the tail of downed Air France Flight 447 that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Before the recovery was announced, Brazilian officials said the number of recovered bodies was 16, not 17 as previously reported, Brazilian news agency Agencia Estado reported.

The United States is also lending Brazil two sophisticated listening devices to find the plane's data recorders to help determine what caused last week's crash.

The plane's wreckage and bodies were discovered about 600 miles northeast of the Brazilian islands Fernando de Noronha.

Prior to the June 1 crash, the aircraft had sent automatic messages indicating faulty flight speed readings before the crash. Investigators were looking into whether that might have contributed to the crash.

Flight 447 was carrying 228 passengers and crew from Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris when it suddenly disappeared from radar over the Atlantic Ocean.
