Rescuers free eight from buried tunnel

SANYA, China, June 7 (UPI) -- Rescuers in China's Hainan province Sunday freed eight people from a recently collapsed tunnel, state media say.

Xinhua, China's official state-run news agency, reported the freed tunnel workers had been trapped inside the Yingbin expressway tunnel near Sanya City since Thursday.

During the workers' 64 hours in the collapsed tunnel, rescuers provided them with food and water through a pipe running into the buried tunnel section.

Xinhua said after the workers were freed, they were all given medical examinations. No details regarding their condition were reported.
