UNIONDALE, N.Y., June 6 (UPI) -- The Nassau County Department of Health in New York has closed 22 beaches because of heavy rain, officials announced Friday.

Newsday reported Saturday that all 17 North Shore beaches will be closed in addition to five beaches on the South Shore.

Closed beaches on the South Shore include: Biltmore Beach Club, Hewlett Point, Island Park, Merrick Estates Civic Association and Phillip Healey, the newspaper reported.

Public health officials said storm water runoff can elevate bacteria levels.
