China-Taiwan relations improve

BEIJING, June 6 (UPI) -- Relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have improved over the past year, observers say.

Xinhua reported Saturday that a turn in cross-Strait relations came after last year's historic meeting between leaders of the Communist Party of China and Taiwan's Kuomintang.

"A series of major achievements have been made in relations across the Taiwan Straits since that meeting, opening a prospect for peaceful development of cross-Straits relations," said Communist Party General-Secretary Hu Jintao when he met recently with the KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung in Beijing.

To further improve relations, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have agreed to address easy issues first while leaving difficult problems for later, reported Xinhua, China's official state-run news agency.

Hu has said the mainland is willing to discuss with Taiwan arrangements for Taiwan's participation in activities of international organizations as long as the move does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan."
