Standoff with Wis. man ends after 7 hours

FOX LAKE, Wis., June 5 (UPI) -- Police in Dodge County, Wis., said a tense standoff with a man barricaded in an area home ended after seven hours Friday with the man's arrest.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls told Milwaukee's WTMJ-TV that 50-year-old Ronald Shurpit was arrested after a SWAT team fired 100 canisters of gas and irritants into his home in an attempt to end his standoff with police.

The standoff began Thursday night after Shurpit, who had been wanted by authorities on an unidentified matter, allegedly resisted an officer's attempt to arrest him at his home in Fox Lake, Wis.

After Shurpit threatened the officer with a lawnmower, he became involved in a physical altercation with the Fox Lake officer, Nehls alleged.

Nehls said Shurpit's girlfriend, whose identity was not reported, allegedly became involved in the altercation, allowing Shurpit time to barricade himself in his home and start the 7-hour standoff.

WTMJ-TV said both Shurpit and his girlfriend are now in police custody on unspecified charges.
