L.A. city council eyes furlough plan

LOS ANGELES, June 4 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council has voted to move ahead with a furlough plan that could close a majority of city offices every other Friday, officials say.

Council estimates point to a $100 million saving in employment costs with the plan.

The council spent more than four hours behind closed doors exploring ways of scaling back city services on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

Members agreed that some services, such as public safety and trash pickup, would be exempted from furloughs.

The council is still negotiating with public employee unions in search of salary or job concessions.
