Romanian seaside lifeguards on strike

BUCHAREST, Romania, June 3 (UPI) -- Romanian lifeguards in the Black Sea resorts of Mamaia and Constanta said they will go on strike unless the government pays them overdue wages.

Adrian Rapa, deputy head of the National Lifeguards Association, told reporters in Bucharest Wednesday they will no longer rescue people from drowning and urged the Bucharest government to pay them their salaries immediately.

Rapa said lifeguards on the beaches of Mamaia and Constanta were on duty during the Easter and May Day state holidays and every weekend in May but received no pay.

The Black Sea lifeguards experienced similar financial problems last season but when they threatened to go on strike, the government paid them overdue salaries, the Romanian Mediafax news agency reported.
