LUCASVILLE, Ohio, June 3 (UPI) -- Daniel Wilson was executed early Wednesday in Ohio for the 1991 brutal killing of 24-year-old Carol Lutz, officials said.
Wilson was successfully executed via lethal injection Wednesday morning after Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, the Ohio Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court all declined to stop the judiciary punishment, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
Wilson, 39, was tried and convicted of killing Lutz in Lorain County Common Pleas Court a year after the woman's death.
Lutz suffered fatal carbon monoxide poisoning and third-degree burns on May 3, 1991 after Wilson locked her in the trunk of a car and lit the vehicle on fire, the newspaper said.
The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch said Wilson's execution at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility made the convicted killer the first man to be executed in the state in 2009.
The execution was also Ohio's first lethal injection execution since the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction revised its related protocol for such punishments following recent criticism, the Dispatch said.
