WARSAW, Poland, June 2 (UPI) -- The mother of a Pole reportedly killed by Vancouver police wants to open the case in Poland after Canadian courts acquitted the officers, a lawyer said.
Polish lawyer Piotr Banasik offered a new witness and arguments and asked authorities in the southern town of Gliwice to open an investigation into the case, Polish Radio said Tuesday.
Banasik is representing Zofia Cisowski, the mother of Robert Dziekanski who died after Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers used a Taser stun-gun on him at Vancouver Airport on October 13, 2007.
Banasik said the new witness testimony will prove Dziekanski was not as "aggressive and threatening" as police claimed in Canadian courts. The lawyer referred to a Czech employee at the Vancouver airport who was dropped from the trial hearings in Canada.
Canadian courts ruled not to charge the police officers with a criminal offense in December 2008.
Dziekanski's mother said she will seek justice in Polish courts on grounds of a Canadian-Polish agreement on mutual legal assistance.
