EVANSVILLE, Ind., May 27 (UPI) -- An Indiana man died of an apparent spider bite, officials say.
The Evansville (Ind.) Courier-Press reported Wednesday that 42-year-old Keith Reed was found dead in bed in his Evansville home Monday morning.
He had a bite on his leg consistent with that of a brown recluse spider, said Vanderburgh County Coroner Annie Groves.
The newspaper reported Reed had been camping in recent weeks at Scales Lake Park in Boonville, Ind., telling his wife later he believed he had been bitten by something, Groves said.
Reed had sought medical attention a couple days before he died, but the venom had likely already gotten into his bloodstream, Graves said.
Although brown recluse bites can be deadly, Groves said they can be treated if sufferers seek medical help immediately.
"Everyone needs to take it seriously," she was quoted as saying.
