GARY, Ind., May 27 (UPI) -- Four bodies that could have been left behind for as long as three years were found in a vacant funeral home in Gary, Ind., officials said.
Lake County, Ind., Coroner David Pastrick said the bodies could have been in the former Serenity Gardens Funeral Home since 2006, when the Indiana Board of Funeral and Cemetery Services revoked the business license for owner Darryl Cammack, the Gary Post-Tribune reported Wednesday
"What in the world is a body still doing in this building?" the Rev. Reginald Burrell said he thought when he spotted a body bag as he and deacons from Northlake Church of Christ toured their new building.
He notified Pastrick, who began his investigation Tuesday, the newspaper said. Investigators found a body in the body bag, one in a corrugated burial box and two in caskets.
"They are unidentifiable," Pastrick said of the remains. "I can't even imagine a funeral director doing something like this."
Cammack, who lost his funeral home license in Illinois in 2003, had been sanctioned by the Indiana board in 2005 after several customers filed complaints against him.
Lake County Commissioner Roosevelt Allen said Cammack could be charged with breaking several laws.
Burrell said his church, adjacent to the funeral home site, has "lots of plans and goals we want to pursue."
