WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- A defense contractor pleaded guilty to wire fraud in the procurement of a bullet-proof vest contract in Iraq, the U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday.
The indictment alleged Diana Baker Demilta, president of Global-Link Distribution, submitted multiple sham bids, subverting the competitive bidding process used by the Pentagon and coalition forces for bullet-proof vest contract, the department said.
Demilta pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud for activity that occurred between September 2004 until March 2005. The plea agreement was filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of on Dec. 18, 2007, and unsealed Wednesday.
Besides submitting phony bids, Demilta also admitted she paid at least $60,000 to an unnamed public official to coax that person to influence the award of contracts and to induce speedier payments for contracts awarded to Demilta's company, the department said.
