Opposition leader Mongolia's new president

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, May 25 (UPI) -- The opposition Democratic party topped the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party Monday in presidential elections in the Asian country.

Incumbent President Nambaryn Enkhbayar of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party conceded defeat to Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj soon after polls closed to prevent a repeat of the violence that followed last year's disputed results, The New York Times reported.

"This is a victory for fairness and honesty," said Galsan Ishdondov, 54, a Elbegdorj supporter. "Finally we will have the change we need and the justice we deserve."

The country of 3 million people between Russia and China emerged from communist rule in 1990 after the fall of the Soviet Union. During parliamentary elections last July, deadly rioting erupted in the capital after Elbegdorj, a former prime minister, claimed the voting was rigged, the Times said.

During his campaign, Elbegdorj pledged to reform the judiciary and ferret out corruption, and promised free education.
