AACHEN, Germany, May 25 (UPI) -- Madeleine McCann's parents say they want a convicted child molester to undergo DNA testing in the disappearance of their 3-year-old in Portugal.
Private detectives hired by Gerry and Kate McCann arrived in Aachen, Germany, Sunday to establish whether Raymond Hewlett, 64, was involved in the girl's disappearance May 3, 2007, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
Hewlett, who is hospitalized in Aachen with throat cancer, allegedly lived within an hour's drive of the McCann's vacation suite in Praia da Luz, Portugal. He has denied any involvement in the girl's disappearance.
German police said they may have Hewlett undergo DNA testing in a separate case involving the death of Hewlett's son in a car accident, The Sun reported. Some of the DNA taken from the McCann's apartment has never been traced.
Hewlett has several convictions of sexual assault against young girls and is wanted for questioning in a sexual assault case in West Yorkshire, England, police said.
