Karadzic asks Hague to drop all charges

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, May 25 (UPI) -- Bosnian Serb Radovan Karadzic asked the U.N. court in the Hague to dismiss genocide charges from the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, judiciary officials said.

Karadzic, former political leader of the Bosnian Serbs, filed a motion to the Hague tribunal asking it to drop all charges against him, including those involving the 3-year-long siege of Sarajevo that left 12,000 dead civilians and the 1995 massacre of 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica.

Karadzic's motion argued the tribunal has no authority to try him because former U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke in Belgrade in July 1996 promised him an immunity protection from prosecution on the condition that Karadzic stepped down from all political activities, the Serbian news agency Beta reported Monday.

The Hague tribunal has already said the immunity deal, even if existed, would not be binding and the trial would proceed.

The tribunal is to hold a special session to rule on the latest Karadzic's motion.
