PORTLAND, Ore., May 24 (UPI) -- An Oregon mother is facing charges after one of her young children drowned in the Willamette River and another was rescued, authorities said.

Amanda Jo Stott-Smith, 31, was arrested Saturday after she threatened to jump off a Portland parking building, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

She now faces charges of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.

Her 4-year-old son died and her 7-year-old daughter was hospitalized in serious condition.

Police said they think the children either fell from or were pushed from a bridge into the river about 1 a.m. Rescue efforts started about 1:20 a.m. after people reported hearing screams of children and adult woman coming from the river, The Oregonian reported.

Stott-Smith was taken into custody about 10 a.m. on the ninth floor of a parking garage. Police said she attempted to leap from the garage when officers approached but they were able to stop her.

The children's father had reported them missing to Tualatin police Friday night, authorities said.
