Buckingham Palace worker accused in breach

LONDON, May 24 (UPI) -- A British tabloid journalist alleges he paid a royal chauffeur at London's Buckingham Palace to enter the residence of Queen Elizabeth II.

Mazher Mahmood of the News of the World alleges he paid the chauffeur, identified as Brian Sirjusingh by Britain's Press Association, to gain access to the palace without undergoing security checks, CNN reported Sunday.

Mahmood alleges he paid the royal worker nearly $2,000 for the palace access.

Mahmood's editor, Robert Jobson, said the alleged palace visit by his journalist, along with another unidentified reporter, showed the royal site has security concerns.

"Nobody stopped him, nobody actually challenged him," Jobson said of Mahmood's visit. "It actually exposes a serious lapse in security at Buckingham Palace."

An unidentified palace representative confirmed to CNN a royal chauffeur had been suspended, adding the unspecified cause for the suspension would be further investigated.
