MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 23 (UPI) -- The African Union says the United Nations should impose sanctions on Eritrea for supporting Islamic militants in Somalia.
The demand from the AU marked the first time it has ever called for international punishment against one of its own members, reflecting the dire situation in Mogadishu where 4,000 AU peacekeepers supporting a fragile government have been targeted by hard-line Islamic militants, the BBC reported Saturday.
The AU said in a statement addressed to the U.N. Security Council that the body should "impose sanctions against all those foreign actors, both within and outside the region, especially Eritrea, providing support to the armed groups," and pleaded for the imposition of a no-fly zone and a blockade of Eritrean seaports "to prevent the entry of foreign elements into Somalia."
The BBC said heavy fighting picked up in Mogadishu Saturday, as government forces fought to regain parts of the city lost to the militants of the al-Shabaab movement.
