PESHAWAR, Pakistan, May 22 (UPI) -- At least eight people were killed Friday in Peshawar, Pakistan, when a bomb in a parked car exploded by a crowded movie theater, police say.

The city's police chief, whose identity was not reported, told CNN up to 400 people were in the Khyber Bazaar area cinema when the car bomb detonated.

He added all of the eight people killed in the bombing were civilians, including some cinema employees.

An unidentified hospital official said several of the more than 70 people injured in Friday's bombing are in critical condition.

CNN said the North West Frontier Province -- Peshawar is the capital -- has been the focus of a major military operation aimed at Taliban militants.
