LONDON, May 21 (UPI) -- American Airlines has confirmed one of its pilots was arrested in London after failing a Breathalyzer test prior to boarding a flight at Heathrow Airport.

The airline said in a statement the pilot, whose identity was not reported, was tested after being spotted by security personnel at the London airport and detained by police, the BBC said Thursday.

The airport incident Wednesday came as the pilot was preparing to board a Boeing 777 flight to Chicago that was carrying 204 passengers.

American Airlines insisted it is focused on passenger safety and routinely tests its pilots for the use of drugs and alcohol, the BBC reported.

"Our primary concern is for the safety and comfort of our passengers and crews," the airline said.

"Employees at all levels of the company are not allowed to be on duty while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and regular screening is carried out."

Details regarding possible charges against the pilot were not reported.
