Obama, Cheney face off over Guantanamo

WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- Dozens of prisoners freed from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have returned to the world of terrorism or military activity, a report says.

Administration officials told The New York Times the unreleased Pentagon report concludes about 1-in-7 of the 534 detainees transferred overseas are back at their old pursuits.

President Barack Obama has said he wants to close the prison by January, a move faulted by critics who worry the detainees will rejoin groups committed to doing harm to the United States and its allies.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told the Times this week the report's findings were still "under review." However, two unnamed administration officials told the newspaper the report was being held up by Defense Department employees concerned about its impact on the administration's plans for Guantanamo.

Obama is expected to flesh out his plans for closing the prison in a speech Thursday at the National Archives.
