Gun provision added to credit card bill

WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- Loaded and concealed weapons will be allowed inside U.S. national parks if the current version of a credit card reform measure gets to President Obama's desk.

Gun rights advocates in the House and Senate have added a concealed-carry provision to a bill imposing new consumer-friendly rules on credit card companies, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Democrats who control both chambers of Congress appear ready to allow the provision to survive, and President Obama is eager to sign the bill before the Memorial Day recess.

For the final vote on the measure, House leaders have indicated they plan to separate the credit card and gun provisions, the Times says.

The two aspects of the bill would then be joined before being sent to the White House.

The Senate approved the credit card bill on an overwhelming 90-5 vote Tuesday.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., a champion of the gun proposal, says the provision is less about guns than states' rights.
