HANOI, Vietnam, May 19 (UPI) -- Six people were killed and seven injured when lightning struck Vietnamese farmers harvesting rice last weekend, officials said.

The deaths came Saturday at two communes in the central province of Nghe An when severe thunderstorms passed through the area, the Voice of Vietnam reported.

Chairman of the district People's Committee Nguyen Tien Loi told the broadcaster that officials had sent in teams of health workers to tend to the injured, adding that the government has given $112 to the families of each victim.

Heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides in central Vietnam, with some rice and subsidiary crops in Ha Giang Province becoming inundated, the report said.
