Dead newborn found in Calif. dumpster

UNION CITY, Calif., May 19 (UPI) -- Investigators were trying to find the mother Tuesday of a newborn baby girl found dead in a trash dumpster in the San Francisco area.

A man looking for recyclable items discovered the body Monday evening in the dumpster at an apartment complex in Union City, near Oakland, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The umbilical cord was still attached, police said.

Lt. Kelly Musgrove of the Union City Police Dept. said that investigators checked on two women in the complex who were known to be pregnant and discovered neither had delivered yet. They planned to check with officials at James Logan High School to find out if any students were believed to be expecting babies.

California has a safe haven law that allows newborn babies to be left at hospitals or fire stations with no questions asked.
