WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., 91, has been admitted to a Washington hospital suffering from an infection, a spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman told The (Charleston, W.Va.) State Journal that the longest-serving U.S. senator was admitted to the hospital late Friday after his body temperature spiked.

Byrd's doctors told the newspaper he is being treated with antibiotics and is responding well. They reportedly said Byrd is expected to be released from the hospital later this week.
