CRESTWOOD, Ill., May 15 (UPI) -- The widow of a former Crestwood, Ill., resident charges contaminated drinking water was responsible for the lymphoma that killed her husband, a lawsuit says.
Michelle Maan De Kok is suing the village of Crestwood and its former mayor for the death of her husband John in 2003 at the age of 39, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
A Tribune investigation published last month found that Crestwood leaders knowingly used a well for more than two decades that the Environmental Protection Agency found to be contaminated with toxic chemicals.
"He had a cancer that doctors believed was related to a chemical exposure in childhood, and it was never known why until my client read the story," said Michael Mertz, Maan De Kok's attorney.
John Maan De Kok lived in Crestwood from the age of 5 until he was around 26.
Since the Tribune's report at least four lawsuits have been filed against Crestwood.
Crestwood representatives could not be reached for comment Thursday night, the newspaper says.
