Report: Five dead in PKK clashes in Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey, May 15 (UPI) -- Three Kurdistan Workers' Party militants and two village guards were killed Friday in clashes in Turkey's Siirit province, Dogan News Agency said.

Hurriyet Daily News in Istanbul, citing the Dogan report, said the clashes in the province's Eruh district also resulted in three village guards being injured.

The deadly battles prompted special gendarmerie forces to be airlifted into the district as an apparent security measure.

Hurriyet said the Anatolian Agency offered a conflicting account regarding the Eruh incidents, reporting one village guard died and another was injured during a landmine explosion Friday.

The agency said a clash between PKK forces and village guards did take place nearby after the blast, but Anatolian offered no casualty details from the clash.

Hurriyet said Turkey considers the Kurdistan Workers' Party a terrorist group as the organization routinely attacks Turkish sites from its bases of operations in northern Iraq.
