Judge won't move 'Rockefeller's' trial

BOSTON, May 12 (UPI) -- A judge in Boston has ruled that a man who used the alias Clark Rockefeller can get a fair trial in the city on a charge of kidnapping his daughter.

Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano said Monday that if impartial jurors cannot be found the trial could be moved elsewhere, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday. Gaziano also criticized "calculated efforts to court media attention" by the defendant and his lawyer.

After his arrest in Baltimore, "Rockefeller" was identified as Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, a German who came to the United States around 30 years ago as an exchange student. He has also been named as a "person of interest" in the disappearance of a California couple in the 1980s.

Defense lawyer Jeffrey Denner asked the court Monday to call his client "Rockefeller" during the trial. He argued that police used that name when they were searching for him.

Gerhartsreiter was married and divorced as Clark Rockefeller. He grabbed his 7-year-old daughter and ran during a supervised visit in Boston last year.
