China seeks tough steps to fight swineflu

BEIJING, May 11 (UPI) -- China Tuesday sought more vigilance against swine flu after the mainland reported its first case of the A/H1N1 virus in a man arriving from the United States.

Top Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, aware of the fight the country waged six years ago against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, lent their support to the campaign calling for strict steps to fight the swine flu virus.

Hu, warning the flu epidemic is still spreading in some countries, ordered governments at all levels in China to enhance emergency response to stem further spread of the disease, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

A 30-year-old Chinese mainland man, identified only by his surname Bao, had reportedly tested positive at a hospital in Chengdu after arriving from St. Louis.

Chengdu is the capital of China's southwest Sichuan Province which Tuesday observed the anniversary of last year's devastating earthquake in which more than 60,000 people died and more than 340,000 were injured.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang visited Bao Monday in Chengdu, Xinhua said, adding those in close contact with Bao had been isolated for observation. He was reported in stable condition with normal body temperature and "recovering," the health ministry said.
