NYALA, Sudan, May 9 (UPI) -- An international peacekeeper in Sudan's Darfur was killed by gunmen who stole his car, U.N. officials said.
The man, whose name was not released, was killed Thursday night outside his home in Nyala as he was parking his car, which was found abandoned several miles outside the city, the BBC reported Saturday.
The man worked for Unamid, the U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force which has lost 34 workers to violence since it began operating in Darfur in July 2007, the BBC reported.
Unamid has an estimated 15,350 uniformed personnel in Sudan plus another 900 international civilian workers.
Meanwhile, Sudan this week announced it will invite new aid groups to work in Darfur, a move welcomed by the United Nations. In March, Sudan expelled 13 foreign aid groups after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for alleged war crimes.
Since 2003, an estimated 300,000 people have died in Darfur and 2.7 million have been driven from their homes by warring militias, U.N. officials said.
