Greenpeace: Greece needs 'green activity'

ATHENS, Greece, May 8 (UPI) -- Greece could have more than 150,000 additional jobs if it invested in environmentally friendly projects, Greenpeace says.

A report released by the non-governmental organization said the new jobs could be created by 2020, Ekathimerini reported Friday.

"For every position created, another 1.6 jobs would be indirectly established," said Stelios Psomas, an adviser on energy and environmental issues for Greenpeace. "The total benefit from green activity would lead to 256,000 to 403,500 positions being created."

Among the areas where employment would likely increase are organic farming, renewable energy projects and recycling efforts, Psomas said.

"The report, using numbers and well-thought-out arguments, shows that a move toward green technologies could improve the employment situation," Greenpeace representative Dimitris Ibrahim said.
