Detroit to have new mayor Monday

DETROIT, May 8 (UPI) -- A quick handover is expected in Detroit now that the city has an elected mayor again.

Dave Bing, the former star point guard with the Detroit Pistons who won a special election Tuesday, could be sworn in Monday, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday. Elections officials say they will certify the results at 3 p.m. Monday.

Bing defeated Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr., the former city council president, who became mayor when Kwame Kilpatrick was forced to resign. Because the special election was to finish Kilpatrick's second term, a regular election is scheduled for November.

Cockrel and Bing held a transition meeting Thursday.

"The reality is you've got to get your arms around the budget," Bing said. "There's some things, quite honestly, that I don't understand, not because I don't understand, but because I don't necessarily agree with them."
