London head teacher fired on porn charge

LONDON, May 7 (UPI) -- The head teacher of a prestigious London elementary school was fired after allegedly watching pornography while at work, school officials said.

Jay Henderson, 35, was dismissed from his $120,000-a-year post at the Canonbury Primary School for gross misconduct, the officials said.

Henderson had been suspended on full pay since October, when the allegation arose. A disciplinary panel fired him after an internal investigation, The Times of London reported.

A staff member is believed to have caught Henderson looking at pornographic material on a school computer, the Times said.

The North London school is where London's mayor and Britain's transport minister send their children, the newspaper said.

"Head teachers are entrusted with the education and safety of children and young people, and it is their duty to conduct themselves accordingly," said a spokeswoman for Cambridge Education @ Islington, which runs the school.

"We expect the highest standards of behavior from school staff, who are role models for young people," she said.

Henderson has a right to appeal his dismissal and his case will be referred to the General Teaching Council for England, the profession's national watchdog.
