Family may sue school for field trip death

OAKLAND PARK, Fla., May 7 (UPI) -- The parents of an 18-year-old high school senior who died in a traffic accident during a school field trip say they may sue her Broward County, Fla., school.

The unidentified parents of Codie Elizabeth Lewis said they are considering suing South Florida Preparatory Christian Academy over the crash that claimed their daughter's life, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Lewis died of serious injuries suffered in Sunday's crash on a Coconut Creek Parkway exit ramp that occurred during a school field trip to Universal Studios' Grad Bash '09 near Orlando, Fla.

Seventeen students had been returning from the event in two vehicles when a school-owned sport utility vehicle rolled over, the Florida Highway Patrol said. A teacher was also killed in the crash, which resulted in injuries to eight others including Lewis.

FHP spokesman Lt. Roger Reyes said a student driving the vehicle may have fallen asleep.

Attorney Jamie Finizio Bascomb, who is representing the Lewis family, said her clients expected adult chaperones not students to be operating the vehicles during the trip.

'If that didn't happen, it's a great concern,'' she told the Herald.
