WASHINGTON, May 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Thursday said U.S.-Russian relations should "normalize" and reach "a new level."
Clinton met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Washington in what has been described as an effort to "reset" relations between the two countries. The Clinton-Lavrov talks followed earlier contacts in Geneva and London.
"The United States and Russia bear a special responsibility, so we are working very hard together," she said, adding, "We want to normalize the relationship and raise it to a new level."
Among the topics under discussion, Clinton said, were Afghanistan, North Korea, the Middle East and Iran.
Clinton said she doesn't think U.S.-Russian differences over Georgia will impact strategic arms talks.
"We're making progress on our agendas (but we still have a) number of important issues for the United States and Russia to discuss," Clinton said during a media availability at the State Department.
