S. Korea tax offices raided in bribe probe

SEOUL, May 6 (UPI) -- Prosecutors raided the offices of a South Korean government tax agency Wednesday, widening the country's bribery scandal, official sources indicated.

Without naming sources, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that 20 investigators from the country's Supreme Prosecutor's Office arrived at the Seoul Regional Tax Office and hauled away computers and documents relating to shoe manufacturer Taekwang Industry Co.

The company's president, Park Yeon-cha, is at the center of the bribery scandal.

Park has been arrested on charges of offering millions of dollars in bribes to political heavyweights, including former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun.

Yonhap said prosecutors also believe Park tried to halt tax investigations against his company by appealing to businessman Chun Shin-il, who attended college with current President Lee Myung-bak, and allegedly conspiring with Kim Jung-bok, former head of the Jungbu Tax Office, on ways to deter investigations into Park's businesses.
