JACKSON, Miss., May 6 (UPI) -- Indicted Jackson, Miss., Mayor Frank Melton was removed from office by voters and hospitalized shortly after the polls closed, officials said.
The controversial Melton, who was awaiting trial on charges he violated constitutional prohibitions against unreasonable search and seizure, did not finish among the top two candidates in Tuesday's city mayoral primary election, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported.
Shortly after the polls closed, Melton, who has had recurring heart trouble, was taken to a hospital, USA Today reported.
Confusion reigned at his campaign headquarters as it become apparent the former television commentator was absent because he had been hospitalized, the Clarion-Ledger said.
"The mayor is at this point sick but is being cared for by very competent healthcare professionals, and we ask for the continued prayers for him," said a statement released by Melton's attorney, John Reeves, on behalf of the mayor's family. "As to any details, I am going to respect the privacy rights of the mayor and his health and also respect the privacy of his wife and family."
The Clarion-Ledger said Melton was elected four years ago by a landslide margin, but recent polls showed him trailing. He was awaiting trial on charges he led a contingent of supporters on a mission to demolish an alleged drug house in 2006.
