Officials investigate Halifax fire

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, May 2 (UPI) -- Investigators in Canada were probing the cause of a fire in the Halifax area that destroyed eight homes and damaged 10 others, officials said.

CBC reported Saturday the fire had been contained, and fire crews would be watching the area for any smoldering debris through the weekend.

"The fire is extinguished. That means right now there is no visible flame. The Department of Natural Resources is going back in there with 20 to 30 of their crews to take care of any possible flare-ups and hot spots," said Lloyd Currie, executive officer with the Halifax regional fire service.

The fire started Thursday. Firefighters got the blaze under control Friday under rainy skies.

Dave Meldrum of the Halifax regional fire service said officials would likely allow residents to return to the last two dozen evacuated homes in the coming days.

Police say they believe a home was set on fire during the evacuation process.
