Shanghai prepares for swine flu arrival

SHANGHAI, May 1 (UPI) -- The city of Shanghai has implemented emergency measures to help prepare for the possible arrival of swine flu, a health official says.

Wang Yi, vice president of the Children's Hospital of Fudan University, said any individual showing possible signs of the spreading influenza strain will be taken to his hospital or the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center as a precaution, the Shanghai Daily said Thursday.

"We have set up three groups to monitor and streamline the prevention and control of swine flu, and all hospital leaders and experts are on standby day and night," Wang said Wednesday. "Swine flu training for doctors and nurses has been carried out. Medicine, masks and medical equipment are ready."

As part of the emergency measures, all patients with fevers at 136 hospitals and medical facilities in Shanghai will be examined to determine if they have swine flu, the Daily said.

Those suspected of having swine flu will be immediately isolated and treated to prevent any potential spread of the infection, also known as H1N1 flu, cases of which have been reported worldwide.
