Lebanese generals freed by U.N. court

UNITED NATIONS, April 29 (UPI) -- Four generals detained in the 2005 bombing that killed former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri were released Wednesday.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon said prosecutor Daniel Bellemare no longer sought to have the generals detained, a United Nations statement said.

The prosecutor reportedly said the evidence was insufficient to seek indictments in the United Nations-backed court against Jamil Mohamad Amin El Sayed, Ali Salah El Dine El Hajj, Raymond Fouad Azar or Mostafa Fehmi Hamdan.

"The scope of the investigation is broad and remains focused on its objective: to assist the court in establishing the truth by uncovering credible and legally admissible evidence that can lead to the filing of indictments and, later, trials," the prosecutor said in court papers.
