SAN DIEGO, April 29 (UPI) -- People out of work and looking for jobs are the latest targets of identity thieves, a California-based watchdog group says.

The non-profit Identity Theft Resource Center of San Diego says the latest scams run the gamut from fake help-wanted ads and job-search services to bogus resume-posting Web sites, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

"There are so many people out there who are desperate to find a job," said Linda Foley, executive director of the group. "Unfortunately, identity thieves are taking advantage of people in these uncertain times."

Identify Theft Resource Center says most job-search fraud appears to come through bogus help-wanted ads, which are up four-fold in the past three years.

Thieves use the information gleaned from unsuspecting job-seekers to open bank accounts and obtain credit cards, loans, cell phone and utility services.

Florida lawyer Steven Fahlgren says he was bombarded with e-mails seeking personal information after posting an ad for a paralegal on the Web site Monster.com.
