Guantanamo Bay to face Spanish probe

MADRID, April 29 (UPI) -- A judge in Madrid, Spain, says an investigation should take place into alleged mistreatment of prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Judge Baltasar Garzon, who is presiding over a case involving four former Guantanamo prisoners, ordered an investigation into alleged illicit activities that took place at the U.S. detention site under the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush, CNN said Wednesday.

The judge wrote in a court order he found sufficient evidence to warrant an investigation into the controversial detention facility in Cuba.

CNN said the judge's ruling last Thursday was based on recent news reports regarding released U.S. government documents as well as testimony from the four suspects in his case.

Garzon said in his order the declassified documents showed "an authorized and systematic plan for torture and harsh treatment of people deprived of their freedom without any charges and without the most basic elemental rights for detainees, set forth and demanded by international treaties."
