Chafee announces run for R.I. governor

PROVIDENCE, R.I., April 29 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., says he will mount a run for governor of Rhode Island as an independent.

Chafee, whose late father John Chafee was both a Rhode Island governor and U.S. senator from the state, announced Tuesday on his Web site and on MSNBC that he will seek election to replace current Gov. Donald Carcieri, who cannot seek reelection due to term limits, the Providence (R.I.) Journal reported.

"The time is ripe not only for a new leadership but a government that works for everyone," said Chafee, who dropped his Republican affiliation after losing his Senate seat last year to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

"I firmly believe in the vital importance of governing from the center -- of listening to all sides of an issue," Chafee said in a statement. "I believe that when we have the courage to do this, to reach across party lines and ideological divides, we will bring people together and great work will happen."
