Busy day for protesters, cops in Wash.

WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- On a single day, police in Washington arrested more than 100 people, including members of Congress and disability rights protesters.

The largest number of arrests Monday occurred at the White House, where 91 people were charged with violating regulations by demonstrating without a permit, The Washington Post reported. Some disabled people in wheelchairs chained themselves to the White House fence.

The first and most dramatic protest occurred during rush hour when members of Greenpeace climbed a large construction crane and unfurled a banner about global warming. Representatives of 17 countries were meeting nearby at the State Department for talks on global warming.

Rescue equipment sent to the scene blocked rush hour traffic as some in the group climbed 140 feet up the crane. Seven people were arrested.

Eight people, including five Democratic members of Congress, were arrested outside the Sudanese embassy when they ignored warnings to leave the area protected by the Secret Service. The group was protesting the Sudanese expulsion of 16 aid agencies.
