ROME, April 29 (UPI) -- Police in Italy Wednesday arrested a senior member of the crime syndicate Camorra and alleged leader of the Casalesi clan, officials said.
Michele Bidognetti was arrested in a suburb of Casal di Principe, the home base of the Casalesi clan, ANSA reported.
The Italian news agency said police seized more than $6.6 million in assets, which included real estate.
Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni hailed Bidognetti's arrest, calling it an "important event which demonstrates how combating crime remains a top priority of this government."
ANSA noted authorities say they believe Bidognetti was acting head of the Biognetti-Setola family on behalf of his jailed brother, Francesco Bidognetti, who is currently serving a life sentence.
