HAMPTON, Va., April 27 (UPI) -- Hampton University students weren't notified of a shooting on the Hampton, Va., campus until hours later because the gunman was in custody, officials said.
Some students and parents criticized HU President William Harvey because text message alerts about the early Sunday incident, in which a dorm monitor and a pizza delivery driver were allegedly shot and injured by a former student, didn't go out until 3 a.m., several hours after the incident, The (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press reported.
But Hampton University Police Chief Leroy Crosby said at a press conference Monday that because the alleged shooter had shot and injured himself during the attack and had been apprehended, authorities felt the situation was under control and didn't require an immediate campus-wide alert.
Harvey said an 18-year-old HU dropout armed with three handguns followed a pizza delivery driver into the all-male Harkness Hall dorm, shot the driver and the dorm's 62-year-old night monitor before turning the gun on himself, the Daily News reported.
Authorities did not release the names or medical conditions of the alleged shooter or the victims, the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported.
