Protesters against IMF vandalize banks

WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) -- Protesters against the International Monetary Fund and World Bank vandalized two bank branches in Washington early Saturday, police said.

A group of about 15 people dressed in black broke windows at Wachovia and PNC branches near Logan Circle and scrawled graffiti in red, including the initials WB and IMF, The Washington Post reported.

Police said the two banks sustained about $110,000 in property damage.

Six people were arrested, including one who allegedly kicked a police officer.

About 150 people participated in a two-hour march and demonstration later in the morning. Another demonstration was scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The protest was timed to coincide with the spring meeting of the IMF and World Bank.

The vandals were originally spotted by an off-duty police officer moonlighting as a security guard at a drug store. He made two of the arrests while the other officers he summoned picked up the other four.
