NEW YORK, April 25 (UPI) -- The city of New York's Health Department had 104 blank birth certificates stolen from it for possibly nefarious purposes, sources say.
Unidentified sources said for the first time in a decade, the city department lost birth certificates in a theft, leading to an investigation by police and city officials, the New York Post said Saturday.
One investigator said the incident being reviewed by the city's Department of Investigation and the New York Police Department could be linked to terrorists.
"It's like hitting the Lotto for a terrorist," the unidentified investigator said.
"Forged documents are one of the primary concerns of Homeland Security. After you get that birth certificate, you can get any document you want. This is extremely serious."
The theft from the city department's offices near City Hall was first noticed by an employee March 12, the Post said.
