BAGHDAD, April 25 (UPI) -- Seven Shiite pilgrims were wounded by gunmen Saturday in a third straight day of violence in Iraq, officials said.
Gunmen fired at the pilgrims' minibus as they were going to a shrine in Balad, seriously wounding four of them, CNN reported.
At least 140 people have been killed and more than 200 wounded in a wave of bombings aimed at Shiites this week. The outburst seems to be overwhelming Iraq's police and military forces at a time when U.S. troops are giving them more control of cities across the country, The New York Times reported.
The newspaper said this week's bombings, including one Friday that killed at least 60 people outside Baghdad's most revered Shiite shrine, brought back memories of a February 2006 attack at the Shiite shrine in Samarra that triggered a wave of sectarian violence and pushed Iraq toward civil war.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki reportedly ordered a special committee to investigate security lapses that apparently preceded Friday's bombing.
